Memories of the Dead, by Phillip Hall is one of those books where I find myself surprised it doesn’t have more reviews or standing. There are A LOT of books out there dealing with the supernatural. Werewolves and Vampires dominate the book market, and the terrible part about that is books like this, with real heart and meat to them, fall between the cracks of the would-be erotica with their chiseled abs and flowing dark hair. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a market for the aforementioned books for a reason, but what happens is real, true literature goes unnoticed, and that’s a shame. Memories of the Dead should not be an unnoticed book. It’s told from the point of view from the main character, Locarno, a young wizard who, at first, was envious of vampires, but that didn’t last. He turns angry and bitter, and his voice as strong as you read his story. The book isn’t overly long, but the rich story weaves in and out through emotion and events, and you find yourself desperately connected to... More > Locarno. The prose is so well detailed, at times i wasn’t really reading the words as I was watching it play out in my head. I literally only have one complaint, and that only lasted a few pages right in the beginning– the use of parentheses were a little over-done, but by around page six or seven, it stopped and I was sucked into the story until I’d devoured the book in one go. I also need to mention here how much I love the cover. As often as I’ve seen photo-manips and poorly mashed together scenes, this was unique and fantastic. It spoke volumes alone, and I absolutely adored it. Seriously, read this book. I’ve a soft spot for old-world style vampire/supernatural books. It’s not my favorite genre since the Twilight craze took over and it became an over-sexed genre, but this was different. This took me back to every reason I ever loved that dark genre. Well done, Hall. I will be looking eagerly forward to anything else he writes.< Less
