"A Wonderful, Absorbing Story of 20th Century Canadian Womanhood." Well-known writer and poet Martin Avery doesn't pull any punches. He opens this rather unorthodox memoir, told entirely in his mother's voice, by outlining a tale of a family curse brought on by an Irish farmer blinding his pigs. Avery's mother, affectionately known as 'Big Phyl', shines forth as the ideal candidate to represent the wild fluctuations of a life that covered the gamut of 20th century feminine identity, from a working class Presbyterian childhood, to wartime factory worker, and finally single mother of hippies. She is the unforgettable heroine in this excellent, unusual book. Left alone to raise four children after 10 years of marriage to an alcholic WWII veteran husband, Phyl manages to live out her life with humour, grace and reflection. Avery's affectionate and gentle rendering of her life is laid out against a vivid backdrop that weaves in world events, local history and pop culture in a way...
