Jing-zhe, which means “the awakening of hibernated insects and animals”, marks the start of spring. It usually begins on March 5, 6 or 7 of each year. It is an age-old Cantonese custom to make offering to the White Tiger (Zae Baak Fu) and to “beat petty little people” (Da Siu Yan) on Jing-zhe Day to get rid of bad luck and unpleasant people from our lives.
