I thoroughly enjoyed it from the outset. A reader with a background in Circus is bound to enjoy the book on another level through the many references to people and experiences that are ‘known’. I enjoyed the style of the book. I liked the way it moved though time and place as well as from the everyday to performance or studio set. I enjoyed reading the studio scenes displayed like scripts, complete with scene discriptions. I’d already decided that I liked this book before I read the historical note that’s featured as an appendix. I learned that the novel is loosely based on Evelyn Hyland Coverley in the early 1900s. I cried when I read that Evelyn wrote to Pixie and said that she was delighted to know about the book. She wrote ‘I rode in the horse races at Halls Creek ... you tell them ...’. It’s a great story, even better when you know it’s based on the life of a woman who rose to challenges of Circus Life in such difficult times and places.

Loved this book. Very creatively written, as it seamlessly transitions between the present and 100 years ago. It had me hooked from start to finish.

This book surprised me. I expected a fairly straight circus story. Using clear language, the plot took us to a different era. I've shared the book with many friends with families: both young and old have found it carries you along. Once you're into the story it's tough to put down.
