Digital imaging has opened the door for many people to go beyond the role of general photography consumers to become advanced amateurs. The number of these photo enthusiasts is growing at a rapid rate, with no end in sight. As a group, they spend far more time and money on photography than other consumers, and their interest is spurred by participation in online communities and sharing sites.
The main objectives of this research are to profile the behaviors and technology use of the new, digitally enabled, online photo enthusiast, and to determine the opportunities they present to the imaging industry. The study seeks to reveal what prosumers are looking for in cameras, accessories, photo services, social networks, TV photo viewing, and photo printing. This year’s “Rise of the Amateur” study takes a closer look at photo cards and personal publishing, as well.
