Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Over 300 personal stories providing insight to the life and times, and the humor and spirit of Forest Service life in Oregon and Washington from 1905 to 2005. Our stories begin with the early Rangers, men who began with not much more than a badge, a horse, meager camp-out gear and orders to manage the newly established National Forests for “the greatest good, to the greatest number, in the long run.” The stories are full of tales about the hardships and difficulties of starting a new venture. They record growth and change as the Forest Service matures, including tales that bring to life fires and floods, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the first smokejumpers, and experiences that chronicle the evolution of multiple-use management from World War II to the present. The reader will experience the beginnings, the growth spurts, and everyday life as told by Forest Service employees and their families.
