After the Partition of 1947, Hindu-Muslim animosity still simmers on the west coast as in many other parts of India. Against this backdrop, Nakul, a youngster from a privileged Hindu family finds himself in a tempestuous forbidden relationship with Ajita, his neighbour’s young wife. This illicit relationship intersects with an equally devastating infatuation of a wealthy old Haji for a young Karbuli girl who happens to be Ajita’s close friend. This tragic tale unfolds in a milieu peopled by magicians, mountebanks, rabble-rousers, young sirens, Mallishawris (prostitutes), holy men and thugs.
