It was probably about 12 o’clock, I’m not sure, I didn’t have a watch, but I couldn’t wait for the knock on the door, I hated school. Olive came and got me; we went to get Sinéad, then Liam. We used to sing most of the time, it used to drive Daddy insane. We'd wait in Ballyhack for the ferry, I definitely remember the ferry, once it got moving we could get out of the van, we would stand looking over the edge at the water.
The hospital was a 30-minute drive from Passage East. We would sit in the back of the van pretending to do homework while really playing I-Spy or fighting. Then the best part – the picnic, I remember ginger nuts, fig rolls, tea, crisps and ham sandwiches. You would never think that we were in the hospital grounds; it was beautiful, I can still picture the trees and the grass.
These appointments didn’t seem to make any difference, he was still sad all the time.
I guess they didn’t work because they never happened.
