Taryn MacTavish found the egg in a pile of wet leaves on a camping trip when she was only nine years old. A nine-year old believes in a lot of things--killer snipes, flying dragons, magical powers and fantastic worlds--but the woman that Taryn has become is firmly rooted in the real world...until the egg she has safely kept all these years hatches into a baby griffin. Now she must make a choice: Abandon Aisling and lead a normal life, or follow a mysterious singing gypsy out of Earth and into Arcadia, where wizardry is very real and each new day brings unimaginable new dangers. The first installment of R. Lee Smith's Lords of Arcadia series, THE CARE AND FEEDING OF GRIFFINS raises the genre of erotica to a whole new level. Richly-styled and filled with Smith's defining blend of horror and humor, Griffins tells a fast-paced suspenseful story that takes the reader right to the edge of the darkest thrills. Jun 19, 2010Another winner! Even the centaurs were sexy!
Jun 19, 2010I have been waiting for new work from this author for two years and I have to say, it was worth the wait. I was hooked from the "Brief Word" all the way up to the very last page and the first thing I did before reading it again was order the second book. For those of you who are not familiar with R. Lee Smith's style of erotica, I will warn you that the book is long (although only half as long as his novel, "Heat". Then again, this IS only the first in a series...) and has a highly unusual plot for erotica: A young woman finds and hatches a griffin, then takes it to another world to raise it. Don't be fooled! This is NOT a kid's story!!! Smith's fantasy world is nicely offset by a firm grasp of reality that allowed me to enjoy the story without feeling like I was reading some middle-school sword-and-sorcery fluff. Example: Taryn, the heroine of the piece and a thoroughly modern Earth-girl, has marched off into the world of Arcadia with nothing to help her survive... More > in the wilderness except some camping gear and a stack of survival books. When I read that, my first thought was, "Yeah, right." But okay, I was willing to let it go because how else is a thoroughly modern Earth-girl going to survive in the wilderness? So Taryn gets to Arcadia, sets up her camp, cracks open her books...and promptly starts to starve to death because there is a WORLD of difference between reading something in a book and doing it in real life. When Taryn ends up at death's door, I wanted to stand up and applaud. I hope you're getting the idea that this book is far more than just boy-meets-girl-and-has-sex because it really is. Although there are plenty of hot n spicy scenes to keep the book exciting, the plot is not just a string of situations contrived to pop people in the sack. In fact, this may well be the first erotic novel in the world to end with its main character still a virgin... In short (too late, I know) I loved this book and can't wait to read the rest!< Less
