This book is a history of the Cuban Republic, from its independence in 1902 to its demise in 1959, when it was taken over by the Communists. It shows the strides and sacrifices of Cubans trying to build a new nation and how a few men destroyed the Republic and brought about poverty, dispair, executions, fear and hunger, just to justify their stay in power. It is the story of the first half of the XX century, when Cubans were learning how to govern themselves; they made lots of mistakes but the Republic had become a progressive and prosperous nation until the Communists took it over, throwing more than a million Cubans into exile.
