Coming out and coming to terms with yourself can be scary and sometimes pretty messy. Rae invites you into her story to show you the waves of fear, hope, and ultimately, acceptance she went through. MySilentHalf originated as a blog on spirituality, sexuality, and life's struggles. Rae started the blog to give the “silent” part of her life (her sexuality) a medium to speak. Little did she know her story would echo and mirror the hearts of so many. This is a collection of those confessions and Rae's journey to accepting herself.

Nov 17, 2014I had not read Rae's blog much before I took to reading her book. I think that it is very rare for people to have a life-changing impact on others. I finished reading the book and I felt like a new chapter for me had started; that I would live each day differently now. I would go out of my way to support others and to continue the community Rae fosters. Rae is more than an inspiration, she is a testament to the way life should be. The book makes you feel fully connected to her struggles, and if you are LGBT and/or religious or have personal experience with similar feats then you will feel like you live on every single page. The book inspired me to write and be vocal about my sexuality to someone I had not told for fear of being cast aside. Being silent only works for so long. Silence means that you are alone. However, Rae very explicitly says that you cannot possibly be alone. Love is all around us. God made us. God loves us. Hate, disappointment, fear, misunderstandings... they do... More > not win. Love and compassion do. Rae changed me. She made me realise love was possible despite constantly fighting against all hope that one deserves happiness. Rae fills me with awe and faith that soon enough I will find what I had for so long suppressed. A deep, loving connection with a girl who likes girls. I am not afraid of that anymore. Coming out happens in stages. I'm near the end now, I wear my heart and my sexuality on my sleeve. I am an LGBT advocate at my school, I fight for love and acceptance every day. Rae reinvigorates that fight. She is truly a wonderful person, and an exceptional writer. Please join us in our quest to remind everyone that no matter their struggle, no matter how they feel, no matter their past - talking wins. Be vocal. Love, and love with passion. That is how we were made.< Less
Nov 17, 2014I went into reading this book with much anticipation as to how the stories that would be shared would relate to my own experiences. I was raised in a conservative Christian upbringing and being gay was a horrifying realization for me. Schneider does an exceptional job at incorporating her experiences and other's into what could be considered a sigh of relief. That sigh of relief is the realization that you aren't alone and I felt at peace with some of the advice and conclusions she drew from her own experiences in relation to mine. This is a wonderful book. Not only focusing on sexuality, but also gave voice to experiences we navigate through life such as dating, relationships, and dealing with internal emotions. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is LGBT and their allies.
Nov 14, 2014From the first page, to the last, reading The MySilentHalf project is like sifting through chapter after chapter of all of the explanations and justifications you've searched for your entire life. It's the kind of book that you're actually happy to finish, because it leaves you with a sense of closure - a better understanding of yourself and even those around you. A must have for both gays and allies.
Nov 14, 2014Gone are the days of writing in a diary and holding in all of our thoughts. My Silent Half gives a voice to all of those questions we held tight to our heart, encourages honest and open discussion, and provides a safe space for each person who reads this series of confessions to say "Me too". I have been honored to know Rae through this publishing process. Upon reading the finished results of this blog, I am blessed to share this story, our story, with anyone willing to listen. I truly recommend this book, not only to those who need to give a voice to their own silent half, but to anyone who, whatever the struggle, needs to know they are not alone, they are loved, and they are enough.
