The author was born and brought up in rural Vermont. His parents, Haven Peck and Lucile Domburgh Peck, were farmers. They had particular interest in the tenets of Shakerism. He had fought in the World War II as a machine gunner in the infantry Division. When he came back home, he joined Rollins College in 1947. He graduated in 1953. He even joined law school, but never finished the courses. Peck did several jobs during his adult life. He even worked in a paper mill, and killed hogs, as his father used to do. Eventually he became a scriptwriter for American Home Products.
