In 1988, "The Devil's Arithmetic" was nominated for the Nebula Award. It also won the National Jewish Book Award in 1989. The novel was also adapted into a Showtime television film in 1999 with the same title. Hannah Stern, the protagonist of the novel, gets tired of hearing her older relatives talk about the past. She continues to be taught by her elders how important it is to know about the history of where one comes from. When she is transported back in time to Poland that was during the Second World War, in the concentration camp she is presented as a girl named Chaya Abramowicz. During her time at the camp, she recognizes her future Aunt and Uncle. She has to endure the horrors of the Holocaust.
