When Ray Farabee was born at home six weeks premature in 1932, the doctor said he wouldn't make it through the night. This is Ray's story of making it through that night and beyond--through the Depression and World War II years, emerging as a leader in public school, working his way through college, leaving the university for two years as a national student leader (1950's), practicing law (1961-1988), serving in the Texas State Senate (1975-1988), and working as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of the University of Texas System (1988-2000).

Rarely do we find in a person such a happy mesh of modesty, competence, integrity, and breadth of interest as the reader discovers in Ray Farabee's engaging memoir. The Greek definition of happiness reads "the exercise of vital powers along lines of excellence affording them scope." He had all this and recounts it in a readable and exciting style. Everyone has a story but some, like Ray's, deserve the retelling more than others. Speaking truth to authority and standing toe to toe with one's opponents are easier in theory than in practice, but Ray did it repeatedly. Farabee gives politics a good name. During his life as a politician he provided the lubrication that make our democracy work. A first-class read.
