A love letter written to Minnesota's Iron Range, this book stunned me. Reigstad weaves a number of tales together that careen back and forth through time, with characters so vivid and human that they jump off the page. Bouncing between funny and heartbreaking, raunchy and unexpectedly sweet, "Chickentown" deserves first an editor to fix the typos, and then a much wider audience. I read and enjoyed Reigstad's earlier effort "On the Move", but it was more of a non-fictional account of a taxi driver's adventures. It takes place in my own hometown of Minneapolis, so after enjoying it greatly, I discounted my interest in the book, figuring that I was biased due to my familiarity with the setting. That certainly isn't the case here. On the contrary: "Chickentown" is an intimate peek inside the lives of addicts, cops, heroes and Iron Rangers leading lives unlike any I've ever known. The structure, especially near the end of the book, breaks ground in the way it... More > uses fleeting thoughts, memories and historical facts to give scenes a chaotic, intoxicated effect. This is a great read. Highly recommended.< Less
