The notion of the psychic defense has been continuously expanded upon since its discovery by Sigmund Freud over 100 years ago. Described by Freud as the signpost to the unconscious, a recent compilation of defenses counted over 100 unique forms. This book attempts to further refine the rationale by which the psychic defense manifests in all such diversity, employing a new approach based on personality theory to further discover its role in a diverse range of psychology and psychotherapy theories, culminating in a model for integrated approach to psychotherapy and a new theory for human consciousness.
