The Darkness Cometh is the demonic inversion of Cinderella. The poor good girl gets to marries the handsome prince and leaves her life of poverty to go and live in a palace. Without giving away any of the plot, that is exactly what happens. Except that this ain't no Cinderella story, or if it is, it is a spooky, cracked troll mirror of Cinderella that shows a world turned on its head and bright spots are hard to pick out from all the increasing layers of grey, and black. Ebony is an engaging heroine as she reluctantly participants in a game of increasing complexity in which the stakes are raised higher with every page. Her opponent is horrifically intriguing as a completely ruthless master of manipulation, with seeming no limit to his guileful nets. A few spaces in odd places, and one or two grammar hiccups don't detract from the book's quick-paced story and unexpected plot kinks. A lively prologue from the Fairy side of the door.
