    "Our future could be something like this" I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic novels. This one, unlike most, does not take place after nuclear war. I won't spoil the story, but the scenario presented for the decline of civilization in "Walk-About" is timely. I was interested in the problems faced by the book's characters and the solutions they crafted, because it is possible that our society may face the same pitfalls in the future. The story is fast-paced and compelling, and the characterization is excellent. I am reminded of some of Heinlein's science fiction novels that feature strong female heroines, but Edna Jean Davis is made of tougher fabric. The way that the story is told as a memory, from the standpoint of a mature central character, allowed the author the indulgences that valued elders earn. The book is full of charming 'asides' that you could imagine coming from your crusty old grandma, but those brief comments also contain powerful social commentary. ...
