Once upon a time, in New York City, two girls meet a mysterious stranger, Bear, who comes to their door one winter night. Rose quickly befriends him, but Blanche is suspicious. To her, Bear seems to be a dangerous person who is hiding things. She's seen him covertly associate with the "drug crowd" at their high school and he tries to sell valuable church artifacts to shady dealers. He is somehow connected to the old abandoned church next to their high school.
But Rose is impressed by Bear's love and knowledge of literature and poetry. Taking her and Blanche to the opera confirms for her that Bear is trustworthy. And yet, as events unfold, even Rose must admit that Bear is hiding dangerous activities from them.
A classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm comes to life as two very different sisters, timid Blanche and impulsive Rose, seek to discover Bear's identity and secret mission. New 2008 revision of a teen novel that has become a cult favorite with hundreds of readers.
Very enjoyable story. Also one I am happy for my teenage children to read as it doesn't compromise the idea of holding to Christian virtues in challenging times. I read it in parts and was entertained with each chapter having its own story but building to the conclusion and the epilogue that was almost predictable but by the end I would have been dissappointed if it didn't happen.
This is one of the Best books I have ever read! The characters are lifelike and it is good to see a book portraying people making the right choices in their life. The action is fast paced and also realistic. I would highly reccomend this book to any teen readers, as well as adults. Good on ya Regina Doman, keep up the good work!
what a great read ! So refreshing to read a novel where the characters make "good" choices based on Christian morals. Regina Doman does a great job of portraying contempory characters in the modern world (no fairytale sugar coating) A good book for young people to be encouraged to live (and uphold) truth and beauty amidst a not always so perfect world.
The book that started it all, in which we meet Bear and Fish, and Blanche and Rose. The lives of the Denniston brothers are on such a different trajectory from those of the Brier sisters that it seems unlikely their paths should cross, unless by a chance meeting in which both parties feel they need to help the other... Be prepared. If you choose to read this novel, you will likely find it witty, thrilling, charming, and difficult to put down when it's getting late and you really should be getting some sleep so you can function the next morning. Further, when you finish, you'll probably want to start right in with Black as Night because you can't get enough of these loveable characters. At least, that's how it happened in this house...
"Once upon a time, in New York City..." Mystery. Suspense. Romance. New York. Fairy Tales. What could be better? I don't know - which is why I recommend this book. It really has it all. Great characters really add to the story. Everyone who I know who has read this really relates to Blanche, or Rose, or Bear, or Fish. In Blanche we see an introverted, shy girl, who just wants to get through high school practically unnoticed. Then, there's her sister, Rose. Extroverted, adventurous, she's really all that Blanche isn't - but that's okay. They fit together like puzzle pieces. Bear drops in. Very mysterious, friendly, but he steers the conversations away from himself - which is fine with Blanche, but makes Rose curious. And then, Fish. We probably see the least of him in this book, but what is seen has made many a fan-girl. Also mysterious, he looks out for the girls, like Bear does, to make sure nothing happens to him. We see him willing to give his life for someone he barely... More > knows. Very well-done. Be sure to purchase this one for yourself, because you won't be satisfied with just one read. I bet you'll find yourself picking it up again and again...just like me.< Less
