Waking Rose: A Fairy Tale Retold (softcover)
eBook (PDF), 352 Pages
"I love him more than poetry... I love him more than song." Ever since he rescued her from Certain Death, Rose Brier has had a crush on Ben Denniston, otherwise known as Fish. But Fish, struggling with problems of his own, thinks that Rose should go looking elsewhere for a knight in shining armor. Trying to forget him, Rose goes to college, takes up with a sword-wielding band of brothers, and starts an investigation into her family's past that proves increasingly mysterious. Then a tragic accident occurs, and Fish, assisted by Rose's new friends, finds himself drawn into a search through a tangle of revenge and corruption that might be threatening Rose's very life. The climax is a crucible of fear, fight, and fire that Fish must pass through to reach Rose and conquer his dragons. The long-awaited third volume in the Snow White and Rose Red trilogy by Regina Doman, based on another well-loved Grimm's fairy tale.

Dec 21, 2010Waking Rose is a riveting tale and an absoloute must-read. The characters are vibrant and almost seem to breathe off the page. The plot is full of fascinating twists. Waking Rose is on my 'top ten favorite books' list!
Aug 31, 2010I previewed this novel for our two teenage daughters, who had both thoroughly enjoyed Shadow of the Bear and Black as Night. Meaning to read it casually over a couple weeks' time, I instead read late into the night and finished in a couple days. Although it was the third volume in a series of the adventures of sisters Rose and Blanche Brier, the story was complete and thoroughly captivating on its own. In passing it to my daughters, they handed me Shadow of the Bear so I could go to the beginning with the Brier sisters' first encounter with Arthur "Bear" and Benedict "Fish" Denniston. Thankfully, my daughters and their friends have no interest in the vast wasteland of books that our culture passes off to our teens. They want their minds engaged and their values upheld in good works of fiction, yet there seems to be a lack of such books. Regina Doman has gone a long ways to fill this void. Her Fairy Tales Novels provide wonderful reading for teens and adults alike.... Aug 28, 2010"I Love Him more than poetry, I Love Him more than song..." In Waking Rose, we get to go deep into Rose's mind, and see her perspective (which is always interesting and delightful) about all the different things that are happening in her life. Starting out with Blanche's wedding (finally!) and then continuing onto college, where a tragic accident happens. We also get a peek into the mind of Fish. He keeps pushing Rose away, in her efforts to get closer to him, but he later finds out really how precious she is...but has he found out too late? The "brotherhood" of the Knights of Sacra Cor lends an interesting twist to the story. And, yes, I have to admit that, as a group, they are my favorite characters. I think I might even like them better than Rose (which is saying a lot!) You don't want to miss out on this opportunity to get to know them and the other characters. Just read it.
Aug 24, 2010"Waking Rose" is definitely up near the top of my favorite books. First of all, I really love the two many characters. It is fantastic to watch their story unfold in the pages of this book. Both of the characters are courageous and brave in their own way. Secondly, the story line is fantastic. Regina Doman once again does an excellent job of retelling a classic fairy tale, in a modern setting. This story has romance, action, adventure, and excitement. This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to all young adults and adults.
Aug 16, 2010Happiness, sorrow, fear, excitement, thrill, joy, hope, despair, doubt, belief, anxiety, relief, contentment, exhilaration, laughter, tears: "Waking Rose" provides the perfect whirlwind of emotions that every book should have.
Aug 9, 2010Waking Rose is the fairy-tale Briar Rose (also know as Sleeping Beauty). There are two main characters; Rose Brier and Benedict "Fish" Dennison, both also in the other two previous fairy-tale novels. This is the last book in the "Snow White and Red Rose Trilogy". In this book, Rose is nineteen, and beginning her sophomore year at Mercy College. She is participating in a college play, and begins to receive strange feelings, instituted by a fellow student, Donna. Meanwhile, Fish is struggling with other issues in his past, and keeps Rose at arms length. But no fear, this book does end with a "happily ever after"
Jul 28, 2010One of my personal favorites of the series, Waking Rose is a wonderful story with as much romance, action, and fairy tale conection as the books before it. Join the characters as they fight past and present evils and find there future.
Jul 5, 2010A beautiful book, one of my all-time favourites. Certainly not a light bedtime fairy-tale for children, but a must-read for any Catholic young adult. The story is equally suitable for young men and young women, as it describes both "His" and "Her" perspectives. I am wholeheartedly recommending this book to all my friends, and even buying a few to give as birthday presents. It's really that good!
Oct 13, 2009"Beautiful and full of truth" This book touched me very deeply- I am impressed and in awe of how the author presents contemporary issues and handles them with sensitivity and understanding. I will never cease from recommending Waking Rose- it is truly a beautiful story with believable and real-life characters. I love how the author combines so many elements- such as suspense, chivalry, true love, adventure, and social issues (i.e., the Pro-Life Movement and feminism)- into one enveloping story. I completely agreed with her world-views and admire how she weaves spirituality so seamlessly into the plot. The messages in the book are so true and impacted me immensely. But be warned- in all probability, you will be sucked into the book and will not escape until you finish reading, as was I! Thank you, Ms. Doman, for writing this beautiful book- I have a feeling I'll never be able to stop re-reading it!
Sep 28, 2009"Best Book of 2007 " "Waking Rose" was the best book that I read this summer and it was such a pleasure! This book has drama, mystery, a very sweet, touching story of true love, and just about everything else that I can ask for in a story. I especially love the vivid, totally believable characters. I can actually visualize them and some I can see as people that I would love to know, while others remind me of horrid, nasty people that I hope never to have the misfortune to encounter. The dialogue is great, easy and realistic. There are some good comic moments in here. (Sacra Cor anyone?)I personally loved the literary references, especially the poetry, in this book! I also enjoyed the part the song "You Just Gotta Wait," got to play, though I may have the title wrong. The imagery is clear and bright. And Regina Doman's style is vibrant, colourful, and brilliant. I actually read this while taking a flight during a vacation and was prevented from finishing... More > it, a mere one hundred pages till the end, for a whole week. It felt like torture and I was so tempted to skip to the end, just to make sure it ended all right. I resisted and I am so glad that I did because it is so important to see what Fish and Rose do to reach that moment and that is what makes it so poignant! I loved the ending. It was perfect. Thank you so much, Regina! Also wanted to add how deeply impressed I was by the way that Regina Doman handled several sensitive topics and some very heavy issues. Really, this is just such a phenomenal book. I waited two years for this to be published (technically a lot longer) and I can honestly say that for me it was well worth the wait! I hope many more people will find it just as enchanting.< Less
