Few Canadians, including those of Italian origin, are aware that during the Second World War the Canadian government ordered the internment of some 600 Italian Canadians as "enemy aliens." Another 17,000 Italian Canadians were ordered to report to the RCMP every month, and many Italian Canadians lost their jobs and businesses. The Italian brings this period to life, and we feel the anguish and despair of the main character Antonio Leone and his young family as everything they have worked for over the years appears threatened. Eventually, he appears before an Advisory Committee to seek his release. As the enquiry progresses the reader is emotionally caught up in the Kafkaesque process in which every innocent act of Antonio’s past is re-interpreted in the damning light of fascist ideology that the hero had so steadfastly rejected. As the case against him builds up we feel the injustice of a process overtaken by fear and ignorance. Antonio is the model immigrant caught up in... More > events over which he has no control. Rene Pappone tells his gripping story in a clear, straight-forward prose providing considerable local colour. For example, Italian words are sprinkled throughout the Italian period of the novel but they are all easily understandable to an English reader. If I have any criticism to make it is that hints of Pappone’s reporter’s voice occasionally intrude in the first part of the book and seem unnatural in the mouth of a young, unschooled peasant, but this is a minor defect in a story that is well worth reading.< Less
