I must thank you for the privilege of reading this book. My time at Holloway was as an officer, and at other institutes as a nurse. My time at Holloway bears out all of which you wrote, and as such, reading your work, I cried from the terrible memories it brought back. I could not leave Holloway because I became caught up in the system. In the end, I was blessed to become ill enough to have the choice taken away from me to leave. I look back and know that had this not been the case, I could so easily have been one of the suicide statistics that you record, for there were many such losses within the staff numbers as well as among prisoners. I was young, and foolishly thought that I could make a difference, but had such hopes beaten out of me, both physically and mentally and not just by inmates. Yet I now know that for every day that I was in the system there were small injustices thwarted because of my presence. Lyn Preshaw
