"Christian Coping and Psychosocial Functioning in Correctional Institutions: Christian Coping in Prison." Very few people could make a successful PhD thesis out of their own life story. Roy Catchpole has done just that. Do not be put off by the awful title or weightiness of this tome. Within it lies a compelling and taut narrative. This is a good story. You forget immediately that it was written as a submission for a PhD. It is written with a passion. There is a best-selling novel struggling to get out of this - and possibly a film, too. He uses the catalogue of his own, dreadful three years incarceration as the structure of his thesis on which he hangs a thorough and exciting condemnation of the penal system. Looking back from forty years later, as an established and scholarly priest teaching at Oxford Brookes University, it is hard to reconcile the silly, delinquent youth who got himself into such a scrape, with the inspirational man he has become. It is a masterful and... More > moving work. An important document of a desperately failing system. People in government making decisions ought to read this. It is an uplifting story which deserves a wider audience than academe, however. The breadth of reading and source material is truly staggering - and from all different countries and different languages. The statistics gathered are very powerful and seem to contradict one's general perception, of the impression the government would like to give. The effect of this story as a novel, or even more so as a film, would be very powerful. It is vivid and cinematic. As an example of the kind of facts related. How many of us would realise that it costs more to keep boys in Feltham Young Offenders Institution than Eaton College! Which would the majority of us think was the more productive institution: Eton wins; no contest! The Rev.Dr.Catchpole is an wholly exceptional person. What worked for him might not achieve any effect in many cases. But his story is truly inspirational. I believe this could be hot property. John E.B.Notley Dip. Arch. (Dist.)< Less
