Job is one of the Old Testament books of wisdom that addresses the perennial problem of absurd and excessive human suffering. The narrative is set within a prologue in which Satan suggests to God that no one serves God disinterestedly. When someone chooses to serve God, they expect something in return for their faithful actions. Such was the challenge of Satan. But there is still a deeper level of truth behind the book of Job. The book of Job illustrates that there are reasons and purposes in these trials and sufferings that humans do not see.
