“The author writes with a storyteller’s eye; his tales are rich in detail, his observations are noteworthy, and his prose is often filled with wry humor. The pictures he paints of colorful personalities are endlessly appealing. An insightful, often funny account of a man who follows a fiscally rewarding path but knows that life’s meaning involves more than money.” – Kirkus Reviews In this book, the author recalls his career and explores how to afford retiring while also coping with the existential crisis that so often goes along with leaving a job that’s defined you. Drawing on his career and personal experiences preparing for retirement, he reveals how the prospect of retirement compels us to ponder what to do with our time and often requires us to find a new identity. Join the author as he rises up the ranks of banking and finance, helps people navigate financial challenges, and shares how to avoid the retirement-saving missteps and mistakes... Mar 6, 2018This is the tale of the prisoner who took charge of the prison -- actually serial prisons! Rich Marin's career, told through a captivating collection of stories, was -- and still is -- a wild ride through the worlds of finance, education, real estate, banking and theme parks. It's hard to believe that one person has done so many different things so successfully. Anyone who has ever had a job will certainly recognize more than one character in here -- and will have a great time laughing about it all.
Feb 9, 2018In the spirit of full disclosure I have known Rich since 1995 when we met at a Cornell Johnson School Advisory Board meeting. I’m not sure how much advice we gave to the facility and administration but we did discover we were both avid motorcyclists. My oldest son, Sean, just got his MBA from Cornell where he took Rich’s class and volunteered it was the best ever. Rich is an incredible story teller. In the classroom, you are not studying but experiencing the world as it is through Rich's lens. This book is just another great example of his ability to write so well, tell an engaging story from a fascinating career point of view, and it make you think about things in life that are often forgotten. Rich’s book resonates with me on many fronts. Unlike when two entrepreneurs come together in a happenstance meeting and they form a company, we formed a motorcycle club which has grown and prospered all these years, well beyond the life of most start-ups. I am more than 10 years older than... More > Rich and we are both still riding, having recently returned from 15 days riding together in Greece, and we continue to be very active in business. We have ridden thousands of miles together, both on motorcycles and in our careers. Rich has picked me up off the road after missing a turn, which also mirrors both of our careers. He is an unusual guy, smart, entertaining, bigger than life, and a gifted writer. His experiences and insights into the ever-mysterious Wall Street game and players makes his book fascinating reading regardless of whether you are an insider or an outsider. I think it should be required reading for young people thinking about or starting a career on Wall street. I spend a lot of time counseling young people on their careers, where many are like sheep, following each other to the Street to make money fast and then eventually finding a real fun life. Stop and read GULAG 401(k) — you just might get out of line.< Less
Feb 3, 2018Gulag 401(k) is a fast and highly enjoyable read which will have you laughing out loud. Marin shares numerous human interest stories from his successful career on Wall Street which are all rich in detail and provide insights into human nature. Marin cleverly ties the stories together through the retirement theme.
Jan 17, 2018Marin introduces his new book" Gulag 401(K)" as a discourse on his thoughts and plans for retirement, after his extraordinary career ranging from traditional banking to the untraditional building of the world's talent Ferris wheel. In between Mr. Marin becomes a teacher, start-up internet investor, real estate manager, author, and movie blog writer, among his activities. He tackles every one of his "professions "with the same enthusiasm, tenacity and abandon ( sometimes reckless)and always with a sense of humor and purpose. The truth however is that Gulag is not about retirement or ending the game, Marin is in no way capable of that. It is about taking on every challenge, every day and in every way. Marin is a combination of Don Quixote and Chuck Wepner, a guy who follows the dream and sometimes get the crap kicked out of him in doing so, Marin's story is an inspirational tale of believing in himself, reaching for the stars , taking personal risk , and always... More > accepting responsibility for the success and for the failure, of which there were many. Marin is an entertaining writer and the book meanders through his life's journey with insight into his business activities and side stories into what is like to be Rich Marin. Some funny stuff, and also thoughts on what is like to feel true affection, responsibility and loss. So don't believe that Gulag is last Marin's last chapter, and don't be fooled by his statement " I did enjoy the game with its ups and downs, cheers and boos". Don Quixote did not retire and neither will Marin. Drop him on Mars and in 6 months he will build a city, and possibly overbuild and be bankrupt in 12. Gulag 401(K)is an interest read, not as a novel, but as a statement of doing and enjoying every moment, and not waiting for "retirement" to find satisfaction and purpose.< Less
