This author has metaphorically merged ordinary childhood stories with an extraordinary ultramarathon. The concept is great, the writing very good, and the stories kept my interest. I only wish there were more of it. Each chapter contains a portion of the run, plus approximately two "mini stories" of a particular character (except one chapter about the family farm, which includes everyone). The story of "Bunny" in particular is a tear jerker, but Coke is also delightful, and Chris sounds like my soulmate. I'd like to meet these people-- I'm sure they are ordinary people, but, like most of us, have interesting hidden histories. A larger publisher should grab this title. Or a movie: "127 Hours" meets "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."

This nonfiction treasure is a great story about a run (20%) with childhood memories along the way (80%). The charming stories are woven nicely into the adventure run. I'm reminded of Growing Up (Russell Baker), Three Weeks With My Brother (Nicholas Sparks), and Born to Run (Christopher McDougall). It's an enjoyable beach/plane read, and I hope to see it catch on.
