These writings are the true experiences of this former Marine. The chronological order of things: I can’t guarantee. It’s been over forty years since my tour in Vietnam and my mind is a little foggy on some aspects and crystal clear on others. I have spent the last few years writing bits and pieces about my tour in the Nam down on paper. They are written with no particular rhyme or reason. You will find these pages seasoned with poetry that I have penned over the past few years. Sometimes I can’t find the words to explain my thoughts and rhyming seems easier for me to explain what I feel. When I started my memoirs I had no forethought of ever piecing them together. I have only recently decided to make these writings public.

Jan 25, 2015I finished your book while on our recent road trip… before I was done my wife had begun to read it as I had shared some of what you wrote while she drove, and it intrigued her… we have been together for 36 years and she could count on one hand and have fingers left over, the number of times she has seen me cry or get choked up… I loved the book… it made me smile… nod my head… shake my head… and cry. Your verse reaches into my heart and soul the way few ever have and those collected here are no different… some works entertain, some exhort and some enlighten… this one made me a better human being for having read it… the heartfelt understanding that it brought. My thanks for writing it… more so for sharing it…
Jan 22, 2015I am a mother of a former Marine, who served in Somalia 93. I am the ex wife of a Marine that served from 69-79. I have just read the book and can't wait to read it again. My brother was in the Army and in Viet Nam 2 tours. He came back with 2 Bronze stars. He has since died in a bike accident. But now I have a better view of what he may have seen thanks to this book. Mr Preston I appreciate the way you write and think. You are an extraordinary man. I wi continue to support this book and encourage my friends to purchase it. You make the brotherhood feel warm and appreciated. Thank you again Sir, and Welcome Home!!! OohRah!!! Outstanding book!!
Jan 21, 2015Boon brings you along with him on this tour of duty. That he has the ability to do just that, makes this one of the most poignant and real depictions of a marine's life in Vietnam during the early years of that long and costly war. You will read of the oppressive heat and humidity, the torrential and seemingly unending rain, and also feel some of the anguish and sense of loss. It will be the truth and the thoughts and apprehensions found in foxholes, the rare humor and irony that will leave you wondering whether to smile or slowly shake your head while mist forms in your eyes. He has a gift that can walk you through times of mind numbing boredom and lonely days and then into nights of hyper vigilance where every sense is tuned to the sounds and the darkness all around. The stories, prose, and poetry will leave the reader with a real understanding of those thirteen months, and of the survivor of that war who gathered this lifetime of private thoughts and memories together here...for... Jan 20, 2015You don't have to be a Viet Nam Veteran to enjoy this book. You won't read page after page of war statistics. What you will read is an account of young men experiencing something they would never forget. From digging trenches by day to waiting in them at night for enemy fire they pray doesn't come. To tasting the local cuisine (I may never eat soup again)to the Christmas box Mr. Preston's mom sent only to have it completely destroyed from a teargas hit by the enemy. From the making of friends to learning those friends were gone. Mr. Preston's writing draws you in to the story and makes you feel like you're right there with him. Read this book and you will see what these young men went through for our freedom and you will never forget.
Jan 17, 2015As a former Marine Viet Nam Veteran I liked the way the book's "no nonsense" style kept me wanted to turn the page. I almost read it in one sitting. It took me back to places I'd long put in the back of my mind, I'd recommend to everyone whether a Veteran or not. For Veterans it makes you both smile and in my case shed a tear or 20, for non Veterans, it hopefully will answer some questions and dispel myth's (true and untrue) of what we Viet Nam Veterans experienced.
