"A great life, in his own words." A fascinating read. Told in his own voice from two centuries ago. I am not an avid reader of autobiographies but this was a great insight into a most remarkable life during the heyday of British sea power and beyond into Empire. His tales make me very jealous for a life long past where a man could literally do whatever he wants - and reinvent himself any number of times. Well edited by Tom Muir who has retained the spirit of the original manuscript but added to the story by sensible corrections and footnotes. One thing I would have liked to see is a glossary of some of the more arcane naval terminology. Maybe he could be persuaded to add this as an on-line resource?
