Advanced Grammar for Academic Writing teaches the learner English grammar by showing the relationships between different grammar points. It starts with an explanation of what a clause is and why it is important to understand clauses. Next the book demonstrates the differences between types of dependent clauses, including noun clauses, relative clauses, adverbial clauses, gerund clauses, infinitive clauses, and participial clauses. The next chapter of the book looks at word forms and explains how they are important to the construction of a clause. Subsequent chapters look at different types of clauses in detail. The book covers all details of the different types of clauses and the types of problems that students and teachers have with these clauses. It goes beyond introducing them, detailing them in a manner that allows teachers to select the aspects that their students are having problems with. The book also covers tense, explaining the importance of states and events and how they... More > relate to the different aspects. Modals are also covered, with an emphasis on hedging and writer voice, explaining how modals are used in academic writing to allow the possibility of error and to position the writer’s views amongst other academic views. The last chapter of the book covers cohesion, explaining how the writer should always introduce new information at the end of the sentence, with old information placed at the start. Patterns of cohesion are also explained in relation to passive voice, adverbial clauses, transition words, and topic sentences. This book is recommended for any students struggling to edit their own essay writing either in a university preparation course or in actual university programs. It is also recommended for students hoping to achieve a 6.0 or 7.0 in the IELTS test. As well, the book is a great classroom resource for teachers wanting a flexible book that they can draw upon to answer student’s difficult grammar questions and to provide the student with exercises to study in areas that they are struggling in grammaticially.< Less
