Numerous poets have explored the subtexts of the fairy tales we tell our children. Underneath the familiar stories lie a wealth of emotions and motives that are common to human beings everywhere, and perhaps are the reasons that the tales have lasted for centuries.
I have attempted to explore some of these emotions with the aid of a modern looking glass. All the old favorites are here, with a few of the more obscure thrown in — a baker’s dozen of stories lit by a new lantern. Each poem features a beautiful pen and ink illustration by Donna Minshew.
