The Wayward Child
The Wayward Child is the true story of an Australian family, set in the WWII years and beyond. You will instantly warm to Rita, the wayward child, and her older sibling Joan. These two children share the common bond of a pitiful existence, played out with a rough diamond father who clearly wanted sons instead of daughters. Their ladylike, demure mother was instrumental in the keeping of matrimonial harmony, with her sweet genteel nature, but lacked the fortitude to oppose any unfitting decisions that served to make their lives more difficult in times of tremendous hardship. With a strong-willed paternal Grandmother, whose love and loyalty to her only son knew no bounds, this story will keep the reader entranced from start to finish. The WWII era in Australia is a sadly neglected piece of history in the literary world. It is a story that needs to be told with passion, and deep respect for the love of a nation.

The Wayward Child By Rita Lowther Review By Margaret Howell, Rita's book took me back to my own childhood, & the hard times we all went through during the after the war. I was hooked from the first page to the last. This wonderful true story will stay with me forever. Generation Y should read this story & they would realise how well off they are today. Review By patricia akers, I loved everything about this book. It was well written, humorous and although sad at times showed the strong will and determination of Rita Lowther. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read stories where you can connect to the writer. Review by Jilly, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down. Thank you Rita for sharing your life with us. You took me into your world with every word. I laughed and cried, I felt angry over many things but most of all the fact that you trusted the Catholic Brother with all your heart only to... More > be betrayed in the most disgusting way. I hope you sought retribution, it's a bloody disgrace the men hiding behind the cloth in the Catholic Church whilst molesting, raping and black mailing the innocent children. I denounced that religion as soon as it all started to be made public. They should castrate all of them as they should never have the need to use it!!!!! On a happier note your use of the Aussie language had me in fits of laughter. A lot I can now remember. Thank you so much for allowing us to share your childhood. It was so well written and I look forward to many more. I am happy you appear to have found peace. I love your frankness and humour. Review By Prin, This is such a beautifully written memoir of a little girl growing up among hardship and good times with her family. I laughed out loud and I sobbed openly and got so angry with her, sometimes my husband thought I was losing my mind. I wasn't "losing it" I was just enjoying a book more than I had in a very long time. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, I would race through whatever I had to do to get back to reading. Please do yourself a favor, purchase this charming book and start on a sometimes beautiful and sometimes very difficult journey. Review By Vivienne Gosling, What a wonderful recounting of those war time days. This book is a joy to read. I couldn't put it down. Let's hope their is a sequel< Less
