I found Memories from the Owens Valley by Robert Ashmore both interesting and educational. He combines his gliding experiences over the Owens Valley with the local history of the area. I enjoyed learning about gliding. I had no idea that thermals could lift one so quickly and take one so far! He recounts miners' tales and mentions long-forgotten towns. I appreciated the web addresses following many where I could research more on my own. I even learned about types and terms of mules with accompanying pictures! I highly recommend this entertaining book!

This is a must-read----for anyone seeking adventure, knowledge, entertainment, and personal dynamics. It is a very readable book, full of such a variety of types of material. The reader can meet Annabelle, the pet raven, soar along on thrilling hang gliding rides while viewing glorious scenery, and learn so much history of the Owens Valley and surroundings. This covers Native American history in the area and a tour of Manzanar (the internment camp for people of Japanese descent during World War II), as well as museums and many historical sites. Author, Robert Ashmore, weaves his numerous experiences throughout this area into a fascinating and unique story, while focusing on his days of hang gilding in this amazing region. He takes the reader inside his circle of friends sharing this sport to learn the techniques, language, and tools---for the purpose of something most of us will never let us join Robert, Tom and Don in the joys of their journey. For an extra bonus, Robert... More > and friends step away from the Owens Valley for a flight over Yosemite--viewing Half Dome, Nevada Fall and El Capitan from a whole new vantage point! Photos throughout the book bring all aspects to life. Further, Robert has provided online links to advance one's knowledge in every part of this story, leading to both video and text to impart additional history, magnificent scenery, information on hang gliding, and the joys of area campsites. I highly recommend inserting oneself into the exciting life of a hang glider pilot, who also uses his time to explore the entire area that so enamors him.< Less
