"Have you met these characters? Meet them again!" Although life is too short and literature is too large to re-read works, the more times I read Robert B. Collman’s short stories, the more I like them. So, if you plan not to read them again, read them slowly, as if you sip a good drink to get the maximum joy of it. Collman can write about the issues of second amendment, the right of not-to-listening a speech, false interpretation of belief, and abortion, without the politicized approach of an activist. Primarily he is a storyteller, a literary man, with opinion and concepts, without being opinionated or conceptual. The morals are untold but they are there. He writes with a huge and live vocabulary as if he combined two ones with his two cultures; his American heritage and his British English living environment. His stories are mysterious or romantic sometimes, but most of them carry a surprising wake-up twist. He speaks for us when the passengers take revenge of the annoying... More > Phoneman, and when the gun-freak bully gets what he deserves. They only happen in his imaginary world, but they happen. Thank you, Mr. Collman, for making our dreams come true in your dreams.< Less

"These are characters you must meet." Bob Collman skewers a collection of dubious characters with an expert eye and lays them out for you to see and enjoy. His manner is light and ironic and he has the gift of story telling. He has the ability to write about music, wargames and baseball, three of the subject I know nothing about, in a way that brings them to life. He has a talent for the telling phrase which lights up the page and allows no room for ambiguity; 'Mad as shaved weasels'and 'Molly was looking at her cards as if they had farted' are just two examples from the gems generously scattered through his stories. Try a 'Ticket to read' and 'Mondays at the Leading Light' for real life situations with an expert twist. This is a book to read and read again.
