Bookwire review from September 2005 CROSSBOW ROBERT ALLEN BURWELL, Lulu Press, Morrisville, NC, $6.98 US, paperback, (48p) ISBN: 1-4116-3320-2 This children's book tells the story of Iswa, a Native American boy small for his size but smart and large of heart. Iswa desperately wants to be a successful hunter like his father, and though he tries his best, he lacks the strength to draw the bow taut enough to make a good shot. Iswa's life is further complicated by the bully Matunaaga who takes pleasure in inflicting pain and embarrassment on little Iswa. When Iswa returns home, dejected after another failed hunting trip, his mother urges him to continue practicing, and his father reassures him by saying "You can do whatever you put your mind to...you are smarter than anyone I know." Iswa loves the beautiful lands of his home and is an acute observer of all that happens around him. When Iswa does well in a game and is injured by the jealous Matunaaga, he begins thinking very hard... More > about how to become a better hunter. In the morning he awakes with an idea for a new kind of bow, which he calls a crossbow. After secretly building his new invention, he carries it to an isolated part of the forest and tests it. The bow works so well that Iswa's arrows splinter on contact with their target! Now he must craft stronger arrows. When Iswa is ready to go hunting, he asks his best friend Catawba to join him. Iswa and his bow amaze Catawba, and the two return home with a prize buck. When Iswa uses his bow to save other children from a wild bear, the whole tribe discovers his wonderful invention. They applaud his ingenuity and the medicine man renames him "Iswa, Master of the Crossbow." In "Crossbow" author Robert Allen Burwell's has created a modern folk story that will entertain children while teaching them valuable life lessons. Young boys aged 7 to 10 will particularly enjoy this warm story of adventure, invention, and victory over adversity. BookWire Review September 16, 2005< Less
