Cyber Jack is a well-written account of the history of Synergistic Software by Robert Clardy, its founder, and produced by the Apple PugetSound Program Library Exchange. The book is written in a very down-to-earth, conversational manner, and covers not just the technical aspects of producing Apple II software, but also the business aspects of starting and running the company. Perhaps what makes Cyber Jack so interesting is that while Synergistic was an important contributor to the industry, it was never a large company such as an Electronic Arts or Activision. Hence the stories, dilemmas, and decisions feel real and relatable, and Clardy does a great job of linking it all to the human and family element. The programmers that have taken the time (and the opportunity) to comprehensively document their experiences relating to the beginnings of the personal computer revolution are, unfortunately, few. Cyber Jack is an excellent exception to this, and shares a trove of historical... More > information that only Robert Clardy could provide. That said, as the book illustrates, calling Clardy a programmer does not do justice to the scope of his work and responsibilities at Synergistic - although it is clear that this was truly the part that he enjoyed the most. Cyber Jack is a fairly quick read that may leave you wanting more details and more stories - which is not a bad thing. It's highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of the Apple II or of the early days of personal computer software and personal computer games.< Less
