Mary is a jaded veteran of the IRA. The husband she silently despised was shot by the English, leaving her to lead a life as a terrorist, a fraudulent mourning widow and a self-doubting single mother. Her political passion is fading and her commitment is now sustained more by her history, her sense of identity, and the assumptions of her held by those around her.
She meets Ian, whose persistence and clumsy deceptions create the suspicion that he is a police spy. But instead of this repelling her, it attracts her. It becomes a sexual game laced with deceit, a romantic novel, a new spark in her life.
As an attack on the government forces in the province looms, it becomes increasingly obvious to the terrorists that there is a spy amongst them. Amidst the escalating paranoia Mary struggles to protect both what she cares for and what she believes in, while still trying to fathom Ian’s role and purpose.
Set in Northern Ireland in the nineties, Medieval Graveyards is a book about idealism.
