First published anonymously in 1894, the brilliant, biting novel THE GREEN CARNATION by Robert Hichens (whose leading characters were based on Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas, whom he personally knew), was an instant 'succès de scandale' on both sides of the Atlantic. However, under pressure from the authorities it was withdrawn from publication in 1895. The reviewer for The Observer wrote "THE GREEN CARNATION will be read and discussed by everyone... nothing so impudent, so bold, or so delicious has been printed these many years." Robert Hichens went on to write more than forty additional books during his lifetime. We are proud to make THE GREEN CARNATION available to the public in this special volume - it will make the perfect addition to any collection or library. The book is edited, with a Foreword, by playwright Anthony Wynn.
