This is a great book. The characters are very real, and I liked the fact that so much of the story is based upon actual facts and data about the sun and the solar system. Lovinger uses this as the basis for extrapolating and creating a very real and believable scenario that will leave you anxious and guessing throughout the entire book. And, I actually learned a lot about the sun and solar storms as well. This book would be great for those who appreciate sci-fi, but like the story to be close enough to reality that they can imagine this all really happening within their lifetimes. Very thought-provoking. I will never take the sun for granted again.

Ever wonder what would happen if solar flares did more than just disrupt the electronics of the world. Lovinger takes you there to play out a possibility given the fact that scientists do not know. He winds a convincing series of what ifs that involves the reader then takes the reader literally underground to wait out the inevitable . What intrigued me most was the constant driving to the end where it looked too much to avoid and too little to fully understand. I saw the final scenes below ground as a descent into hell but with faint possibility of redemption for the human race. There are some touching scenes such as when the main character Charlie is asked what is the most beautiful aurora he has ever seen as a tour guide. His answer is the feeling we are left with at the end of this assault- "the one I will see tomorrow."
