A good read with an interesting idea for an ISOT. Detailed knowledge of the state of English and neighbouring states in the period and also the technology, both military and non-military of the period. Along with parallel knowledge of the abilities and problems Nelson and his men aboard the Victory would face in their new world. This is coupled with some good interactions between various people and groups, displaying their interests and characters. A fair number of people you can care about what happens to them and a few you can hate or despise. The presence of Mr Felton is a necessary factor for the Victorians to have any chance of really interacting with the people of 793AD. I suspect he also, via his relationship with Swanhild, will provide the best basis for their longer term survival and assimilation into 8th Century England and the culture that will develop. Less certain that Captain Hardy's decision toward the end of the book will be viable but looking forward to seeing how... More > things develop in the next in the series.< Less

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mr. Perkins' book "England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty". Time travel/alternate history books are a favorite genre and this book certainly met my expectations. A feature the author used is most helpful to those not familiar with the geography of England and the 8th century place names. The author, through subtle references, let the reader equated the modern day places names--e.g. Canterbury, York--with the names in use in the 700s. The depiction of the technology available in 1805 and how that could have been recreated in 793 was well written and plausible. The conflict between 8th century Catholic belief and 19th century protestantism gave the book an added element to the antagonism between the various tribes and kingdoms. I highly recommend this book.
