"Review of The Khrushchev Proposal" What makes this nimble little novel so entertaining is that the reader finds himself engaged in intelligence activities right along with Scott, CIA, on his first assignment to the Himalayan country of Taklan. Immediately Scott realizes that he can't relie on training or procedural manuals in this exotic place where people and events may not be what they appear. Instead he must call upon considerable tact, discretion and people skills to set in motion his special projects. Scott takes us along on his encounters with a series of fascinating characters who are portrayed in the rich context of their local customs, culture, and economy. He does leave us for some private moments with the beautiful niece of the German ambassador. When one of Scott's major projects falls through with near disasterous results, Scott gets no sympathy from his crusty chief who is too busy trying to prevent office embarrassments and scandals from getting back to... More > Washington. Scott's problems continue as he is baffled by his failure to make contact with a list of agents who have been supplying intelligence reports. He might have taken a hint as to what is going on from an outrageous proposal made by Nikita Khrushchev. Lively dialogue is punctuated with more dramatice events including blackmail, a shooting, a defection, and a plane crash which reveals disturbing cargo. We leave this intricately-plotted novel with its wry overtones and serious undertones still echoing in our minds as we look forward to accompanying Scott on his next overseas assignment.< Less
