Heart

ByRobin Harger

It is often said that the Heart Sutra contains, in its very brief format, a full account of Buddhism. The Sutra, being so brief, can thus be thought of as a kind of manual that has been prepared for the use of “Graduate Students”. As such it is crammed full of technical terms which require expansion if the material is to be clearly understood by the lay-reader of the current age. The Heart Sutra describes the source of compassion as being beyond the reach of ordinary human consciousness in association with the manner in which it entered into discourse within the "world of name and form". This is a priceless teaching and will benefit all those taking the trouble to understand it. An extensive listing (glossary) of technical terms directly and indirectly referenced in the Sutra is provided so that the basic meaning of the work can be extracted without further ado. The scripture originates from the core of the Mahayana tradition as founded by The Buddha in his later teachings.
