Feb 26, 2016Thank you, Rodger, for writing a book about your wonderful family and my Dad's cousins. This book was a stroll down memory lane for me with all the familiar names and places. I remember the hog butchering, the home canning, the church dinners and the revivals at Barks Chapel. For anyone who wants to know about rural living in the 50's and 60's--no running water, wood stoves for heat, outdoor bathrooms--this is the life many of us lived. Thank you for an honest, heart felt biography.
Feb 18, 2016Very good book. I enjoyed it and appreciate the work this family did and their service to God. I would recommend the book to those who are interested in rural life in the 1950's. Brought back lots of memories for me attending rural churches in southeast Missouri.
Feb 18, 2016Great read. I could not put it down until I had finished. Brought tears to my eyes. Good history of rural ministers and their families. Recommend to anyone interested in the struggles and determination of ministers to follow God's will.
Feb 10, 2016Interesting read, even for someone that didn't know them. The author did a good job honoring his parents, and their chosen vocation. I think he could have given more detail on his father's last night, perhaps an essay written by someone at his bedside, since he did of the mother's. The hardships of everyday life in the era of much of the book, was some of the best reading. Overall, for the author's first effort of writing, not a bad book at all.
Jan 25, 2016Written by my Dad, so I already knew that it would be wonderful. Thank you for putting together these memories for all of us to remember and to share. Growing up you don't pay too much attention to how amazing your grandparents are. Arvil and Emma Lee Huffman took a six year old girl, not of their blood, and made me theirs. I hang the ornament that my grandma made for me that first Christmas with them on my tree now and remember her reading the Christmas Story. I miss my stocking full of fruit and gum. I pull out Grandpa's hat that grandma gave me and swear it still smells like him. They were loving, patient people that touched the hearts of many. I was always amazed how well known they were in the community. Reading about their background makes me appreciate them more. They were amazing people. I love that there are actual sermons of grandpa's (Rev. Huffman) and grandma's poetry recorded in this book for all to share. This book is a treasure that I get to share with my daughter and... More > so on. Thank you again Dad for writing this.< Less
