This is the phonics workbook described on the OnTrack Reading website (www.ontrackreading.com) that is used when teaching the Advanced Code. Instructions for using this workbook can be purchased here at lulu.com as either print book or an e-book. Together, the instructions and the workbook constitute a complete advanced code phonics program at an exceptionally low price. The OnTrack Reading phonics curriculum will build blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation skills while teaching all of the common spellings of English sounds and their overlap options. In addition, the curriculum teaches how to methodically decode 2, 3 and 4 syllable words chunk by chunk using a method so easy to implement that it encourages students to quit guessing at unfamiliar words. The workbook has been extensively field tested by the author and the instructions are comprehensive.

Feb 6, 2018I have used this book for my son. I have found it very useful. We have managed to finish the book and help my son to read proficiently. It is succinct, to the point, without divulging into more details. My son has followed it without losing attention. I highly recommend it. One suggestion if I make it, I wish the author could give more emphasis to reading long words
Sep 11, 2017I am a Special Education teacher and I have been using the OnTrack Reading Advanced Code Workbook with students in various Resource classrooms since about 2009. Every student I have used it with has made progress. Last year, I had a 3rd grade student start the year reading at a level 3 and after working with this program, he was able to move up to a level 8. I wish I was able to spend the recommended hour a day with this program. I think my students would see even more success. I have also used Mr. Everson's multi-syllable method with groups of 4th graders and with 7th graders. These students had often stalled around the 2nd or 3rd grade level in their reading. The multi-syllable method was a very effective in helping many of those students to move past those reading levels. Finally, I have learned a great deal about phonics through my use of the program. I highly recommend it.
Mar 10, 2012I'm so happy to have found this program last August. I'm using OnTrack as a follow-up to a beginning program we already loved. We began with Reading Reflex for the basic code (wonderful for starting out) and changed to OnTrack Reading Advanced Code. OnTrack is so much more engaging at that level. The stories are funny, the repetition is just enough, and there is plenty of variety in the exercises. I have had to slow the suggested pace down considerably for my first grader due to the amount of writing required, but he is now reading well above grade level and asks to read more than I ask him to. For my third grader, OnTrack has been an excellent review of most of the code. She appreciated the pages called "Reading A" (for example) where the student sorts words spelled with an a into columns based on what sound the a stands for. Columns are listed in order of the frequency of which they occur. My daughter's fluency has improved, and that has improved her comprehension. She now... More > really knows all the spellings of the code and has gained confidence from that. My favorite thing about OnTrack is the sections at the back of the workbook where Mr. Everson has given rules to help a student break down three and four syllable words. These pages have helped her tremendously. Even my older daughter, after overhearing our sessions, told me she now uses this strategy to decode unfamiliar words. There are also pages for spelling multi-syllable words and spelling word endings. I haven't personally used this program for remediation, but I did recommend it to a friend who had a struggling reader. They are using it very successfully, and the student is now reading on grade level. They couldn't be happier, and neither could we. I would recommend OnTrack Reading to anyone who is looking for a firm foundation in reading.< Less
Mar 1, 2012Having used similar approaches for a number of years - particularly with struggling readers aged 7-10 years - this resource provides a highly structured programme which teaches all of the necessary phonic knowledge for the various representations of vowel and consonant spellings, alongside mapping and sorting activities designed to present a 'filing system' to enable learners to retain the knowledge they have gained. Stories are provided following a number of the vowel sounds to provide opportunities for the application of phonics skills and knowledge. Basic suffixing is taught at relevant stages. The book also includes an ingenious method by which to teach multi-syllable decoding - which should be tried by any teacher struggling to teach a reliable strategy / approach for reading two and three syllable words! Further lists are also included to practise phoneme manipulation (an essential skill for reading). All in all, a very thorough resource (which I have used successfully with... More > 'dyslexic' children) at a very reasonable price, with detailed teaching notes and further explanation available from the author's website at ontrackreading.com.< Less
Oct 19, 2009I used Rod Everson’s Advanced Code Workbook to jumpstart my daughter’s reading. His approach is very easy for parents to use -- brilliantly simple, logical and straightforward, and it produced effective results after we’d tried a number of popular reading methods without seeing any change. My daughter’s a smart little girl however she really struggled with reading. I got Mr. Everson’s workbook during spring semester first grade and within the first two hours of coaching she started to read simple words -- we were in the grocery store and she walked around going, "That says EGGS, that says MILK!" Over the next two months she made enormous, measurable progress and by the end of the school year was reading at grade-level. In a nutshell: Mr. Everson’s workbook offers incredible "bang for the buck" and was easy to use at home. In addition his website http://ontrackreading.com/ offers incredible insight into what’s needed for a child to read fluently. His educational...
