This is an astounding book from my oldest friend - a noted artist and now debut writer. Birchall has produced a collection of almost post-modern philosophical essays that would easily sit alongside Bacon, Hazlitt and Orwell. He has managed to synthesise many of the perpetual anxieties and common preoccupations besetting his generation of anglo-saxons born just after the second world war. Birchall has done this by putting his own thoughts into the imagined words and personae of familiar figures, from literary greats to commonplace characters. Dipping into this book is like spending an evening in front of your ideal chat show line-up from the last fifty years. It is copiously illustrated, too, with morphing self-portraits of an excellence one has come to expect from such a formidable draughtsman as Roger Birchall.

Mr Birchall has produced a rare and welcome book. He has managed to interest, intrigue and entertain in equal measure as he deftly adopts famous voices of the twentieth century to present us with his original take on some political, philosophical and moral issues that have called for our attention in past fifty years. The format he has invented for the book allows him to move easily between farce and philosophy and, amongst the humour, to give us a full plate of challenging thoughts to chew upon. It's an amazing achievement for a first book and speaks of a lifetime of deep thought, compassion and maturity.
