Rich-Hunt is the most comprehensive study to date of the interaction of business, law, and journalism in the backdated options episode. It is a case study of prosecutorial misconduct and the tendency of the media to be an echo chamber for accusations against businesses. But it is first and foremost the story of a man who excelled in business achievement. Greg Reyes rose rapidly in the world of high tech to become CEO of Brocade at 36 and increased its revenues twenty-fold within three years—only to be felled by a miscarriage of justice. In this deeply researched work, Donway shows how Reyes became the victim first of a board made fearful by the power of regulators; then of a frenzied media attack on backdated options; and, finally, of prosecutors who charged him with fraud. Despite the prosecutors’ failure to establish that someone was misled, the central point required for a charge of fraud, Reyes was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison and a $15 million fine.

Jul 18, 2012As a serial entrepreneur I have had my share of first-hand dealings with overregulation, overtaxation, and arbitrary use of government power. Roger Donway's Rich-Hunt tells the true story of Greg Reyes - a capitalist hero who finds himself being persecuted by the media, regulators, and lawyers - a living nightmare that is a cross between the second part of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and Franz Kafka's The Trial. The book is a very exciting read and very thoroughly researched. Unfortunately, it is not a work of fiction. As Donway brilliantly demonstrates in Rich-Hunt, innovation and productive achievement are being rewarded with multimillion dollar fines, jail time, and public vilification in the media. It is imperative that this story is spread far and wide!
Jul 15, 2012The most significant book published by the Atlas Society in a long time, "Rich-Hunt: The Backdated Options Frenzy and the Ordeal of Greg Reyes," by Roger Donway, is now available here. I believe this book is destined to become a classic in the literature of finance and in the story, finally being told, of the merciless persecution of enormously productive and innovative businessmen by a generation of lawyers, regulators, and media reporters indoctrinated in college with the anti-capitalist mentality--the dogma that outstanding success and wealth in business are almost by definition suspect, dangerous, and anti-social. This has turned a generation of entrepreneurs that have given us a revolution in technology--giants such as Steve Jobs and the less-known Greg Reyes--into prey for reputation-seeking prosecutors, regulators, and reporters. Read this book if you care about real justice. Roger is an exciting, obsessively factual and accurate, and insightful writer. Rich-Hunt...
