From the early teachings of the Buddha to the present day there has existed a direct method of Buddhist practice which, as well as providing the path to the emancipation from suffering, is at one and the same time the goal of that path. This path/method (magga) and goal/result (phala) is the ‘unborn’ which is Nibbāna.
This path of the ‘unborn’ has surfaced in the teachings that the Buddha gave to Bāhiya (Ud 1.10), in the Tathāgata-garbha literature, in Chinese Chan, Korean and Japanese Zen, Tibetan Dzogchen and at least one 21st century Theravādin Organisation.
That the ‘unborn’ is ‘selfless’ leaves no gap for the criticism that some form of ātman is being imported into Buddhism.
