This is not a book by a writer of unnecessarily long, or overly descriptive passages. What it is instead, is a thought-provoking chronicle of the experiences of a young man in the Second World War. Nothing needs embellishing, or fancy description, because it's all fascinating in and of itself. Ron Warburton simply tells you what happened during his time in the RAF as a Flight Engineer. And that's all he needs to do. The first few chapters about his early life are very interesting themselves, but also necessary in setting up the wartime chapters which, once you reach them, are un-putdownable. As someone brought up having never experienced anything like it, you realise just how different life was back then, and how amazing the actions of those men and boys really were. A lot of the information in this book I never knew, and certainly never took the time to think about. Ron's War tells you about the war from a new persective, with incredible detail (especially after the passage of so... More > much time) but without the need for dressed up language, and simply enough that the technical world of the Lancaster Flight Engineer is accessible to anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it.< Less
