I've always been curious about what stories lay behind closed doors. Everyone has a story, but not everyone will let you in to hear it. When a career change came along late in my life, a door opened up, so to speak, giving me the opportunity to peer into some of those mysterious places. I became a sales representative for a major moving company. My job was to provide an estimate for people's impending moves. Everything they owned was laid before my eyes. I had the privilege to read their life story by simply going through their belongings. I was given permission to invade their privacy.

This is a beautiful book. It’s a simple premise. The author Ronald Crosthwaite tells the stories of families he met while working as an estimator for a moving company. There were many times when I finished a story thinking “this can’t be true.” How could there be so much drama in just an hour of talking to a family about moving? Could this have really happened? The author assures us that all of the stories are true. Taken as a whole, the stories paint a detailed and beautiful picture of the mosaic of humanity. Individually the stories are poignant, moving, surprising, humorous and inspiring. The author is a gifted storyteller with the ability to create a feeling of intimacy with each of the families through only a few pages of narrative. It’s a quick read and very satisfying. I hope this book is widely read so the author will be encouraged to tell more “moving” stories in a sequel to this first installment.
