Ronaldo Cadeu's "Imaginary Lands" is based on a musical genre popular in Brazil during the 19th-century: the modinha. This genre has its roots in Portugal, but became quite famous in Brazil during the end of 18th-century, lasting until the beginning of the 20th-century. Although the melodic shape of Imaginary Lands is closely inspired in that of the Brazilian modinha, its harmony brings a more dissonant and aggressive type of chords, based on modern popular Brazilian music, mostly the Bossa Nova - a genre perpetuated by composers like Tom Jobin and João Gilberto. Imaginary Lands'lyrics were originally written by the composer, and portray a feminine character in deep emotional conflict who prefers to invent an imaginary controlled reality in which ideal love and safe happiness could be achieved.
