The Life of Caleb

ByRonda Anne Pohner

Caleb was embarrassed to invite his friends over to his house, especially Sims. He did not want them to see what a freak his parents were. Sims showed up at his place earlier in the evening to play his new Nintendo game. Unfortunately, the game console was in the den with his parents. During play, Sims would often look back at his parents with a quizzical look and then look at Caleb oddly. Caleb could feel his cheeks turning red. All he could do was smile half-heartedly and continue on with the game. Sims’s Mom called him for dinner to Caleb’s relief. After walking his best friend to the door, Sims asked the question, “Why are your parents so quiet? They look like statues,” he remarked. Caleb made up some excuse about them having a hard day and probably was too tired to associate.
